What the Studio does
Emily Unkle Studio specializes in commercial interior design, with a strong emphasis on experience based spaces. From food and beverage and community spaces, to music and arts event experiences, human interaction with created environment is my driving force. From start to finish design and creative work embody the process of developing concepts and bringing them to reality. As a designer my goal is to make each person feel something in the space or event I’ve created. To feel home, or comfort, or nostalgia, or curiosity or joy.
A major part of the design process is concept work; understanding what draws each client to a given space and why it speaks to them, and then translating that into a new and unique concept that tells the story you want to tell in physical reality, while also balancing the needs of budgets, permitting, and engineering.
Interior design is distinct from interior decorating, in that while it contains elements of interior decorating, it also includes details prior to furniture and finishes; including weigh in on architectural details, lighting and plumbing plans, fixture details and placement, floor plan development, finish selections, and all design based details. Interior design is the practice of taking all of the pieces and ensuring that they create a cohesive experience. With a family background in the construction industry I know it’s important to make sure that all issues are accounted for; from planning through installation. Details bring visions to reality.
